Where Can I Get Free French Fonts?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

You don’t need French fonts, per se; all font sets that comply with the UTF-8 encoding standard (almost all, including the ones that come with Windows / Mac OS, do) have special French characters available.
To see how to type them, go to Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Character Map.
Select the character you want to create. Let’s use é.
Click on the letter in the map; it will get bigger and appear in the “Character to copy” field. You can simply copy it from there, if you want.
But if you look to the right of the dialog box, you will see Keystroke:
That shows you the keys you need to type to reproduce the character. In this case, it’s Alt+0233.
So, hold down the ALT key on your keyboard, then, using the NUMERIC KEYPAD on the right of the keyboard, type in 0233.
That will work in most programs, but not in a Web form.
Here’s a trick for Microsoft Word, so you don’t need to go through that rigamarole:
Copy the character as noted above
Go to Tools –> Autocorrect Options…
Make sure the Autocorrect tab is selected
In the box marked Replace, enter (e)
In the With box, paste the character
Click the Add button
Click OK
Now, whenever you type (e) into your Word documents, you’ll get é.

Where Can I Find A Free “wall Street Journal” Font?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I need a font that looks the same as the one the Wall Street Journal uses in their masthead. A font that comes very close is called Finalia DT Condensed Demi, but it’s an expensive one to buy. There are plenty of free font websites but I haven’t found any that offer the Finalia font or any others that will produce a typeface similar to the one the Wall Street Journal uses in their masthead. I don’t want to pay for it if I don’t have to. Any help would be appreciated.
